Bit Fitting

Bit Fitting

A bit fitting for your horse is a great way for you as a rider to have peace of mind when schooling your horse. As we all know, horses can be a puzzle when it comes to trying to solve issues as they arise and contact problems can be especially difficult.

When I assess your horse for the best bit for them, I first check them dentally to make sure there is no pain or lack of movement being caused by their teeth. I then assess the conformation of your horse’s mouth, this can be a great indicator for us to check areas that may be more sensitive, be receiving too much pressure or have pinching. It is also important to correctly assess your horses mouth shape and size so we know the final bit we choose can sit comfortably and correctly in your horses mouth.

As a rider you are often the best person to advise me of issues that your horse is experiencing. It is important that during the assessment you tell me about any contact problems or riding issues you are having no matter how minor they may seem. Major ones that I look for are:

  • Opening of the mouth
  • Pulling the tongue back, to the side or over the bit
  • Chewing or grinding of the teeth
  • Being very strong in the contact
  • Being one sided, turning one way better than another, head tilting
  • Head Flicking
  • Not wanting to take a clear contact
  • Being too light in the rein
  • Sitting above the bit
  • Over reacting when taking up the rein
  • Not slowing down correctly when asked to
  • Ignoring the rein aids
  • Not salivating or over salivating
  • Resisting the bridle being put on

Once the assessment is completed I will then have a selection of bits for you to ride in and we can assess how your horse goes in them together, they are then with you for a trail period of 30 days to allow you to ride your horse in a range of situations so you can be confident you horse is truly happy and comfortable. Once you are confident in your bit choice you can return the trial bit and visit our shop to purchase your new bit.

What our clients say

My tb I tried 9 different bits on her and she put her tongue over all of them or bunched her tongue up behind! I messaged Try A Bit with the issues I was having and they suggested a bomber happy tongue which has a port for the tongue to sit under relieving all tongue pressure. I trialled it and she has never stuck her tongue over the bit again!

Highly recommend Georgia ! Had a bit fitting session last night and she spent a long time trying to find a bit suitable for my sensitive gelding! At no point did I feel rushed with her time or pressured to settle on a bit. She has extensive knowledge with the bits/horses mouths and we walked away happy with a bit that he goes lovely in now 🙂
