The Waterford Barrel has many smooth flexible barrels which spread the pressure slightly more than the bobble / ball version, making it a little lighter in pressure. The barrels also mean that there is a smooth surface against the horse’s lips preventing the lips from getting pinched.
The eggbutt sides allow for less sliding through the mouth, giving more stability to the bit and aiding with turning. It also prevents pinching and irritation of the lips that can sometimes happen with a loose ring.
A waterford is a great bit for a horse that likes pressure spread through the mouth, it can be a strong bit when required but with the snaffle sides you have a 'true' contact making it a good option for someone who needs a slightly stronger bit on a sensitive horse that doesn't need the leverage of a gag.
